Summary in the original language of the document

Natural weaning of pigs gradually progresses over several weeks. In commercial farming however,it became common practice to abruptly separate the piglets from the sow several weeks earlier than under natural conditions. This can cause stress, often leading to malnutrition, weakened immune status and post weaning diarrhea. This is a serious health and welfare issue and negatively impacts growth and feed efficiency in the growing stage.
