Summary
This booklet for policymakers and stakeholders at the national and regional level describes, based on the results of the LIVESEED project, how to stimulate organic seed production and use, and how to enable organic seed availability on the market.
Topics discussed in the booklet include:
- policy measures such as training, subsidies, access to facilities and post-release cultivar trials
- how to manage the derogation process in combination with the National organic seed databases and an EU router, including the role and mandate of expert groups
- the need for adapted cultivars, enabled through alternative seed sources, among which are farm saved seed, populations and organic heterogeneous material

Teaser: | The role of policy in a stronger organic seed market |
What problem does the tool address?: | EU organic regulations mandate the use of organic seed but availability of organic seed in Europe is limited and action is needed to improve the situation before the derogation process currently in place to address this lack of availability is removed in 2036. |
What solution does the tool offer?: | This booklet provides policy recommendations on how to stimulate seed production and use, how to manage the availability of seed through National Annex databases connected to an EU-wide router, how to handle registration of heterogeneous populations (newly introduced in the regulations) and alternative sources of organic seed. |
