Summary
The carabid and staphylinid populations of five water supply facilities and their surroundings in the region of Basel, Switzerland, were sampled with pitfall traps. Four traps per field were laid out during 14 days per month from April to September 1996. 11522 beetles from 239 species were caught; 5312 individuals from 207 species within the water supply facilities and 6210 individuals from 155 species in the surrounding fields. Compared with the surrounding fields, the water supply facilities showed (1) higher species diversity, (2) more stenoecious species, (3) more exclusive species and (4) more carabids from the red list of endangered species.
