Summary
In organic farming legumes play an important role in crop rotation. Especially in stockless farming systems clover-grass is hardly cultivated any more, whereas grain legumes are preferred. The purpose of the field trials (2001-2004) was to examine the effect of field beans, grain peas, bush beans and red clover-grass compared with the control spring wheat on the following crop potato.Yield of potato following the cultivation of all legumes was on average significantly higher (13 – 16 %) than the previous crop spring wheat. No differences could be seen between the four legumes, but year effects were apparent. A significant increase of potato tuber yield after bush beans could only be achieved in two years when catch crop (Phacelia) had developed well. Clover-grass showed only a beneficial effect on tuber yield when the portion of clover content was high.
