Summary
L'agriculture est une forte consommatrice de plastique, notamment pour les films utilisés pour pailler et protéger les cultures. Les films biodégradables représentent d'ores et déjà une solution intéressante face au problème de gestion des déchets après usage. Toutefois, certains écueils de ces matériaux à priori plus écologiques subsistent. Après un rappel de la réglementation en vigueur sur l'utilisation du terme « biodégradable », l'auteur soulève la question des matières premières utilisées. En effet, même si les films biodégradables apportent une réponse environnementale intéressante pour leur gestion en fin de vie, ce n'est pas forcément le cas pour leur fabrication : utilisation de matières premières non-renouvelables, matières premières d'origine végétale dont la production nécessite l'utilisation de surfaces nourricières… Des recherches sont actuellement en cours pour parfaire l'impact environnemental des paillages plastiques biodégradables. Concernant les films classiques, une filière recyclage présentée en encart se développe peu à peu.
Summary translation
Agriculture is a major consumer of plastic, especially with the films used to mulch and protect crops. Biodegradable films already represent an interesting solution to the problem of waste management after use. However, some pitfalls of these more ecological materials remain. After a reminder of the current regulations on the use of the term "biodegradable", the author raises the question of the raw materials used. Indeed, even if biodegradable films provide an interesting environmental response for their end-of-life management, this is not necessarily the case for their production: use of non-renewable raw materials, raw materials of plant origin whose production requires the use of food-producing surfaces... Research is currently underway to perfect the environmental impact of biodegradable plastic mulches. Concerning the classic films, a recycling sector (presented in an inset) is developing slowly.
