Summary

The requirements of organic farming as well as the animal welfare measures of the EUs Rural Development Programme (RDP) are action-oriented. Thereby good conditions for animal behaviour are created while on the other hand animal health aspects are not addressed to the same extend. The aim of the project was to further improve the animal welfare situation in organic farming and of farms participating in
RDP animal welfare measures, and especially to include animal health issues by developing a concept for a result-oriented approach to animal welfare. We selected
indicators, developed a system for the definition of threshold values and formulated recommendations for the implementation of result-oriented measures into organic
farming and the RDP.
