Genetic correlations between milk yield and different fitness traits were estimated in Fleckvieh and Brown Swiss cattle. These updated correlations were taken into
account in the calculation of an organic total merit index (ÖZW), where the fitness traits have larger weight than in the conventional total merit index (GZW). As a
consequence, the relative theoretical selection response in functional traits (18-23%) was higher and the selection response in milk yield was lower than before. This index
is therefore more suited for the ecological breeders but may also implicate that biological and conventional breeding goals will drift apart. To ensure that in the long term suitable bulls for biological farms will be available, AI
stations will have to purchase these bulls based on the ÖZW and should carry out planned matings with bull dams on ecological farms.
