Summary
Peracetic acid (PAA) can improve water quality in a way that does not affect the fish, the farmer nor the environment. This presentation included recent findings of ways to improve PAA water treatment strategies. The study compared two distinct way of applying PAA – either as a pulse or as low dose continuous addition. Selected markers to address potential negative impact on fish welfare were used.
Cortisol expression was temporarily increased following pulse addition but subsequently fish adapted and cortisole expression remained at low, similar levels as measured among control fish and fish exposed to continuous low dose PAA exposure. Pros and cons about PAA application and its consequences were discussed as well.
