Summary in the original language of the document
Legume foot and root diseases are influenced by complex interactions of site, soil properties, seed health, cropping sequence and climate. Crop rotation, cover crops and organic matter management are the key management tools in the dealing with the increase pathogen pressure. Application of high quality composts and other organic amendments is potential ecologically friendly alternative to fungicide application for control of soil-borne fungal pathogens.
In order to evaluate the potential of Yard Waste Compost (YWC) to suppress foot rot disease of pea caused by Didymella pinodes (syn Mycospharella pinodes), Phoma medicaginis, Fusarium solani f. sp pisi and F. avenaceum, a pot experiment was carried out under controlled conditions. The susceptible spring pea variety Santana and the resistant winter pea EFB33 were grown in sterile sand and sand amended with 3.5% or 20% (v/v) YWC as a substrate and either inoculated with spore suspensions of the pathogens or left uninoculated. Three weeks after sowing assessment of disease severity was done and yield parameters were measured.
Regardless of the variety and pathogen, application of compost reduced the severity of foot rot. Significant effects of compost application rate were observed with EFB33 inoculated with F. avenaceum and Santana inoculated with P. medicaginis, where reduction of disease was higher in substrate amended with 20% YWC. In other pathosystems application rate of compost did not significantly affect suppression of disease.
