Summary
Resistente stammen van de schimmel Aspergillus fumigatus zijn in toenemende mate een probleem in de gezondheidszorg. Bepaalde groepen patiënten kunnen door deze resistentie niet of onvoldoende behandeld worden aan een infectie en kunnen daar vervolgens aan overlijden. Er zijn sterke aanwijzingen dat deze resistentie, voor het eerst gevonden in 1998, (mede) veroorzaakt is door het gebruik van azool-fungiciden in de landbouw. In dit rapport wordt samenvattend de problematiek van de schimmelresistentie in de landbouw en gezondheidszorg beschreven en worden de bouwstenen voor een onderzoeksprogramma waarin de bijdragen van biologische landbouw en complementaire gezondheidszorg worden onderzocht, op een rij gezet.
Summary translation
Resistant strains of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus pose a growing problem to human health. Patients with an infection cannot be treated adequately with antibiotics, and may actually die from the infection. There is strong indication that this resistance, first detected in 1998, is (partly) caused by the agricultural use of azole fungicides. This report summarizes the problem of fungal resistance in agriculture and health care, and presents the building blocks of a research programme investigating how organic agriculture and complementary health care can contribute to solving this problem.
