Summary
O mutualismo entre formigas e plantas consiste na proteção da árvore pela formigas contra herbívoros, que recebem em troca alimento ou local para nidificação. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi verificar a relação entre Acacia mangium Willd e formigas visitantes. O estudo foi realizado em Cáceres, MT, em 14 plantas de A. mangium escolhidas ao acaso em um sistema agroflorestal. Em cada planta foi mensurada a área foliar consumida por herbívoros através de um gabarito, em quatro folhas/planta. A agressividade das formigas em relação aos herbívoros foi medida pela observação da retirada de cupins fixados nas plantas por uma hora. A relação entre a desfolha de A. mangium e a abundância de formigas e ao tempo de retirada do cupim foi analisada através de regressão múltipla. As formigas encontradas foram Crematogaster, Brachymyrmecini e Camponotus. Não houve relação entre a desfolha média e o número de formigas encontradas sobre as plantas. Porém, foi constatada relação negativa entre a desfolha e o tempo para a retirada do cupim. Devido à existência de agressividade das formigas perante herbívoros na A. mangium conclui-se que esta espécie exótica abriga formigas nativas com comportamento defensivo. Entretanto, é necessário investigar se estas formigas recebem em troca fonte de alimento ou local para nidificação para caracterizar mutualismo.
Summary translation
The mutualism between ants and plants consists of the protection of the tree for the ants against herbivores, that receive in exchange food or place for nest building. The objective of this research was to verify the relationship between Acacia mangium Willd and visiting ants. The study it was carried out in Cáceres, Mato Grosso, State, Brazil, 14 chosen plants of A. mangium to perhaps in agroforestry systems. In each plant the foliar area consumed by herbivores through an answer sheet was measured, in four leaves /plant. The aggressiveness of the ants in relation to the herbivores was measured by the comment of the withdrawal of termite fixed in the plants for one hour. The relation among takes away takes away the leaves of A. mangium with abundance of ants and to the time retired of termite were analyzed with multiple regression. The joined ants had been Crematogaster, Brachymyrmecini and Camponotus. It did not have relation between takes away the leaves average and the number of ants found on the plants. However, negative relation was evidenced between takes away the leaves and the time for the withdrawal of termite. Due to existence of aggressiveness of the ants before herbivores in the A. mangium one concludes that this exotic species shelters native ants with defensive behavior. However, it is necessary to investigate if these ants receive in exchange source from food or place for nest building to characterize mutualism.
