Summary
Summary translation
Three experiments were conducted to evaluate the viability of intercropping carrot-lettuce, lettuce-radish and beet-lettuce, under organic management during 1996 and 1997 in Seropedica, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Nutrient budgets were also calculated for these systems. The first experiment consisted of lettuce cultivar Veronica plus carrot cv. Brasilia intercropping, and lettuce 'Veronica' plus radish "Hibrido n° 19". The intercroppings were compared with their respective monocultures. The plots were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replicates. In the second experiment, the same cultivars of carrot and radish were used intercropped with lettuce cv. Regina 71, under the same experimental design as Experiment 1. The third experiment evaluated intercropping of beet and lettuce. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with six replicates. The carrot-lettuce intercrop was beneficiai, with values of Land Equivalent Ratio (LER) greater than 1,0. The same results were found for the lettuce-radish intercrop. Due to the arrangement adopted in the third experiment, beets were dominant in relation to lettuce when intercropped, affecting lettuce growth negatively. Results of plant tissue analyses o f ali vegetables were used to calculate a nutrient budget. It consisted of quantifying macronutrient input (fertilizers) and output (harvests). Positive values were found, except for potassium. Greater amounts of this element were necessary to carrots and radish in monoculture and carrot-lettuce intercropping. Monocultures of lettuce and beet had highly positive budgets.
