Summary
Mussel meal is produced in a pilot plant near Gothenburg in Sweden. Mussels filter sea water, and can thus recycle nitrogen and phosphorus from effluents. Instead of being a waste, surplus mussels from mussel producers can be converted into protein feed for animals. Mussel meal has already proved to have a high feeding value for poultry. Now mussel meal will be tested as a feed for growing-finishing pigs, within the CoreOrganic-funded research project ICOPP.
