Summary

Summary translation

Since recently, there are reports from The Netherlands about an obviously high frequency of the occurrence of a special clonal MRSA line, the Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) type „ST398“, in pig herds. MEEMKEN et al. (2008) reported about the occurrence of MRSA in German conventional pig herds. They found that humans occupationally exposed to pigs in conventional herds showed a 30 times higher frequency of nasal colonisation with MRSA than the regular population. Since organic pig farming is characterised amongst others by different housing conditions, hygiene regime, and a restricted use of antibiotics and disinfectants, the question arise whether the occurrence and distribution patterns of MRSA in organic pig herds differ from those in conventional pig herds. The aim of the planned investigations is to provide a contribution to the knowledge on the occurrence of MRSA in organic pig populations, which is to lead to developing targeted MRSA control plans both for organic and for conventional pig populations.
The methodological approach is bi-phased: 1) estimation of the MRSA herd prevalence by testing dust samples from 40 organic pig herds (method as in the EU baseline study on MRSA in conventional sow herds); 2) identification of the MRSA intra-herd prevalence and dynamics in MRSA-positive organic pig herds. The sampling and laboratory methods are designed according to the BMELV study on MRSA in food animals.
The milestones of the planned two-year project are:
•Developing and using a MRSA-specific questionnaire for identifying risk factors on the study farms (milestone 1),
•Testing dust samples for identifying MRSA-positive organic pig herds, and testing nasal swabs for identifying the intra-herd dynamics of MRSA in organic pig herds (milestone 2)
•Combining the results of this risk factor analysis with the bacteriological MRSA results and the data analysis of all results lead to the final report (milestone 3).
