Summary

Nitrogen removal from accumulation sediments near the coast and in the open Gulf of Finland are of similar magnitude - neither more efficient nor weaker near the cost. Seasonal variation in nitrogen removal is significant, with the lowest values recorded during early spring and te highest during late autumn. This variability is linked to the sedimentation and decomposition of organic matter. In the coastal areas, temperature has a large impact on the process rates.
