Summary

Summary translation

Two field experiments were conducted, one in 1995 and one in 1996, to study the prospects of using physical pre-emergence weed control methods in row crops of high value such as seeded onions, seeded leeks and carrots. The studies were made in seeded onions and the physical control methods used were a false seedbed techniques, pre-emergence flaming and pre-emergence weed harrowing. The methods should only be considered as a part of a weed control programme for the crop where other methods conducted post emergence are also included. Weed harrowing and flaming conducted one or two days before crop emergence were comparable in their weed controlling effects and they did not damage the onions significantly. Pre-emergence weed harrowing does not necessarily have to be conducted just before crop emergence. It may also be done four to six days before crop emergence without getting less weed control effect. The false seedbed technique were of no benefit to the use of the other control methods mentioned. Consequently, it cannot be recommended to delay the sowing of onions just to make it possible to do a false seedbed.
