Summary

Summary translation

The woolly apple aphid has been recognised as a serious pest in organic apple growing for some years and is still hardly to control. Therefore the main aim of this project was to develop a strategy to control the woolly apple aphid in practical fruit growing situation.
A. mali is a natural antagonist of woolly apple aphid. Releasing parasitized mummies on paper cards has not been successful in 2004. Also the production of parasitized mummies has been difficult and their storage led to high mortalities and delayed hatching. The releasing of adult A. malis in 2005 showed better results in controlling the aphid population than using mummies but the released A. mali were still not able to control woolly apple aphid completely. The fertility of A. mali depends on temperature and light intensity. Usually the weather conditions in this latitude in spring are not optimal conditions for A. mali. Therefore it is ineffective to released A. mali in spring because of low reproduction rates. In 2006 A. mali were released in addition with preceding oil application. The application of TS-forte (wetting agent based on vegetable oil) in early spring reduced the growth of the aphid population. A. mali were released later when climatic conditions were suitable. Possible phytotoxic effects, however, must be taken into consideration when using the oil preparation.
A. mali is able to reduce the woolly apple aphid population in summer, but because of a lack of synchronisation between host and beneficial insect, A. mali is not able to prevent the damage caused by woolly apple aphid.
Lime sulphur has a high contact toxicity on A. mali, but it does not influence the population in the orchard.
Artificial rearing of A. mali is possible, but much more expensive than 250€/ha which was set as a price limit.
