Summary

Summary translation

A population of earthworms can eat its way through 25% of the top soil layer every year. The worms have a gizzard and microorganisms in their intestine. Because of this the decomposing of organic matter passes much faster with earthworms in the soil than withouth. Earthworms build up humus (complex organic molecules) and the excrements from the worms are important nutrition for plant roots.
