Summary

Summary translation

The on-enterprise research is based on the project “Network organic food in brand quality”. This allows deep insight into elements and management of cooperational marketing. The cooperation process initiated through research activities is put into practice by food manufacturers. The network consists of ten predominantly conventional food manufacturers which develop a collective organic marketing venture and that way offer growth impulses to retail chains in organic markets. In 2004 for the first time in Germany joint sales promotions for organic brand products were performed with two retail chains.
Three different product strategies were used by conventional food manufacturers for their organic range: the doublet strategy often leads to failure (confusion of customers, limited shelf space). Innovation and substitution strategy can be successful.
Organic retail brands are the range with about the lowest turnover in retal chains. They lack a superior image and mainly focus at high intensity consumers of organics. This target group is too small for the mass market of retail chains. A strategic re-orientation of the organic range is mandatory in order to better address occasional buyers of organics and to make their mark in the field of quality.
Interface problems: contact between manufacturers and retail chains takes place only on the operative level between salesmen and purchasing agent. There is no strategic cooperation to develop the organic market. Organic products do not have any function in the category management. The fundament to solve these interface problems is a horizontal cooperation between manufacturers. This cooperation offers a sound concept instead of single products. The brand image becomes a vehicle to a higher demand for organic food an improved quality image. This report illustrates the experience made with the installation of horizontal and vertical cooperation.
