Summary

Summary translation

The aim of this study was to compare the bacteriological quality, including the occurence of certain types og pathogens, og organic lettuce fertilized with different types of cattle manure. The field trial with Iceberg lettuce (Lactuca sativa var. Crispum, 'Iglo') was carried out in 2001 and 2002. The treatments were slurry, farm yard manure (FYM), composted cattle manure and mineral fertilizer. Samples of soil, manure, soil fertilized with manure, lettuce seedlings, lettuce and the outer leaves of the lettuce plants (in 2002) were analyzed for indicator bacteria of faecal contamination (thermotolerant coliform bacteria (TCB) and Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes. The various treatments gave significantly different numbers of TCB isolated from manured soil, but no difference was found in lettuce at harvest. In 2002 E. coli O157:H7 was found in slurry and FYM, and in soil fertilized with slurry and FYM one week after fertilization. E. coli O157:H7 was not found on lettuce at harvest. Salmonella spp. and L. monocytogenes were not detected in any samples in the study. The results indicated that there is no difference in bacteriological quality of organic Iceberg lettuce manured with various types of cattle manure.
