Summary translation

As clover-grass leys have high sulfur requirements and atmospheric sulfur input has decreased over the last few decades, there is uncertainty as to whether sulfur is a limiting nutrient in organic clover-grass cropping. Therefore, field trials were conducted at four experimental sites in biennial clover-grass leys sown in August/September. The eight treatments were fertilized in each harvest year. Specifically, magnesium sulfate (20, 40 and 60 kg S/ha in early spring), calcium sulfate (40 kg S/ha in early spring) and elemental sulfur (20 and 40 kg S/ha in autumn, 40 kg S/ha in early spring and 2 x 20 kg S/ha from the date of sowing) were applied, and compared to an unfertilized control.
Sulfur fertilization increased clover-grass crude protein yields in both harvest years, fertilization with elemental sulfur only in the second harvest year. In the first harvest year, yields were higher for treatments fertilized with sulfate than for treatments fertilized with elemental sulfur. However, there were no differences in yield between fertilizer types in the second harvest year. Additionally, fertilization of 40 kg S/ha*a is sufficient.
