The demand for fresh vegetables in winter has been steadily increasing. In the cold season these are either imported or grown in heated greenhouses. Both systems are characterized by high energy consumption. Given rising energy prices and the large carbon footprint this situation is undesirable in organic agriculture. grown successfully in two seasons in unheated polytunnels at Horticultural Center Cologne- Auweiler. The taste and appearance of the harvested salad mixture received high consumer acceptance. Therefore the tested mixture is a valuable enhancement of the product range. This is especially interesting for farms which employ year round or have a direct marketing strategy.
