Summary
Steeds meer akkerbouwers nemen lupines en veldbonen op in hun teeltplan. Dat heeft verschillende redenen. Een stijgende groep consumenten heeft interesse in ‘vergeten groenten’ of wil zijn maaltijd verrijken met hoogwaardig plantaardig eiwit. Voor de bodem zijn dergelijke eiwithoudende gewassen een plus: de teelten leggen stikstof en CO2 vast en verbeteren de structuur en vruchtbaarheid van de bodem. Bij het beheer van natuurgronden staan echter andere doelstellingen voorop. Om op natuurgronden toch succesvol peulvruchten te kunnen telen, is kennis cruciaal. In deze handleiding staan belangrijke do’s and don’ts, verzameld vanuit wetenschappelijk onderzoek en ervaringen vanuit de praktijk in het kader van het project Peulvruchten Voerteelt op Natuurakkers (2013‐2015).

A growing number of arable farmers are including lupins and faba beans in their crop rotation scheme. One of the reasons is that consumers are increasingly interested in 'forgotten vegetables' and high-quality plant-based proteins to enrich their diets. Secondly, legumes play a valuable role in crop rotations as they fix nitrogen, sequester carbon, and improve soil structure and soil fertility. However, these effects (particularly with regard to soil fertility) may not always be desirable when growing legume crops in conservation areas . This manual presents a number of do's and don'ts to successfully grow legumes in conservation areas, based on scientific research and practical experience gained within the project Growing fodder legumes in conservation areas (2013‐2015).
