Summary

Summary translation

The project aims at the investigation and development of an environmentally sound plant protection strategy. Recent analyses showed that bacteria in plant rhizospheres produce Quorum Sensing (QS) molecules that have positive activity on crop plants. QS signals support bacterial communication, biofilm formation and infections. Interestingly, however, plants do sense those molecules and as a consequence plant resistance status and biomass formation seems to improve.
We will investigate plant responses to QS molecules and assess the potential of those molecules to be used in crop production. Preliminary data show strong activity of the molecule from the type N-acyl-homoserin lactone (AHLs). Based on this we plan a systematic analysis of the activity of AHLs characterized by different chain lengths on resistance and biomass formation. The innovative aspect of the project concerns the dual activity of AHLs, the induced resistance- and growth promotion activity.
A structure-function-analysis will help to define the structural requirements for beneficial activities. We will test AHLs of various carbon-chain lengths and with various structural modifications in hydroponic cultures with barley seedlings: (a) What effects have AHLs on powdery mildew development on barley leaves? (b) What effects have AHLs on the biomass formation of leaves and roots? (c) What effects have AHLs on root morphology? (d) We will test the most active AHL defined in (a) under field test conditions in agronomically relevant host-parasite systems such as barley – Puccinia graminis; rapeseed (Brassica napus) – Verticillium spec; wheat (Triticum aestivum) – Blumeria graminis f.sp. tritici / Cochliobolus sativus; Fusarium graminearum. (e) Finally, we will assess biomass- and yield effects (grain yield/oil content of AHLs defined under (b) in wheat, rapeseed and barley.
