Summary

Summary translation

The project aims to enhance the suitability of grain peas for organic farming by increasing the number of available cultivars and to save their sustainable cultivation by selection under organic farming conditions. Preferably, genotypes which are winter hardy, semi-leafless, white and purple flowered, resistant to lodging and with a determined growth pattern shall be developed. Moreover, genotypes will be examined for their suitability for cultivation in mixtures with cereals like triticale, rye and winter wheat, but also rape-seed and turnip rape.
The workpackage comprises field trials with three replications and around 30 genotypes and aims to examine emergence, winter hardiness, course of growth and vegetation, disease resistance, and yield and quality parameters. The suitability for cropping in mixture with the above mentioned is investigated with rape-seed, turnip rape and different cereals. After each year, the decision which genotypes are to be selected is made after reconcilement with the project partner in Darzau and according to the formerly mentioned criteria. Selected genotypes will be analyzed for crude protein, tannin concentration and trypsin inhibitor activity of the winter peas.
At the end of the project, selected prototypes of winter peas are presented and – if possible –proposed for registration with the Federal Plant Variety Office. For future winter pea breeding an ideotype shall be defined and the suitability for mixed cropping with different partners will be described. Promising genotypes from younger breeding material (F6 generation) will be available for the development of further prototypes.
