Before introduction of herbicides shallow ploughing was a widespread method of stubble tillage. In June 1999 25 trials on 7 organic farms were set up in South Germany. Three treatments of stubble tillage were compared: 1. “Stoppelhobel” (shallow ploughing); 2. “non inversion” stubble tillage (mostly chisel); 3. “control” (no stubble tillage). Results are shown for the first 16 months after initiating the experiments. In spring 2000 significant differences were assessed between the treatments “control” on one hand and “Stoppelhobel” and “non inversion” on the other with respect to perennial weeds. The same results were recorded on the stubble 2000. For annual weeds treatments never differed significantly. Yields showed no significant differences in most cases, however in two cases, oats and spelt, yields in the “control” were significantly lower than in both treatments with stubble tillage.
