Ihr natürlicher Lebensraum ist der Wald mit kleinen Lichtungen. In dieser Umgebung können sie rasch Schutz vor Gefahren finden. In unseren Breitengraden werden zwar immer mehr Hühner in Freilandsystemen gehalten, doch meist wird Ihnen eine offene und strukturlose Wiese als Auslauf angeboten. Daher sollte es nicht erstaunen, dass die Hühner den Grünauslauf nur teilweise nutzen und sich vor allem nicht sehr weit vom Stall entfernen. Ein Grossteil der angebotenen Wiese bleibt oft ungenutzt. Eine vermehrte Nutzung des Grünauslaufes, vor allem aber auch eine bessere Verteilung auf der Aussenfläche, ist daher erwünscht. In einem Versuch in Kleingruppen am Forschungsinstitut für biologischen Landbau wurde untersucht, welchen Einfluss Menge und Vielfalt von Strukturen auf das Auslaufverhalten von Legehennen haben.
