Foderrationen forventes i stigende grad at være baseret på grovfoder, idet udbytte-potentialet under danske dyrkningsbetingelser er klart højest i de typiske grovfoderafgrøder (græs, majs og helsæd) i forhold til mere proteinrige og koncentrerede afgrøder som ærter, lupiner og korn til modenhed. Der er imidlertid behov for mere viden om den mest hensigtsmæssige tilpasning af bedriften således, at en høj selvforsyning med foder, kan ske samtidig med at bedriften opretholder sin lønningsevne, og fodringen tilgodeser køernes behov og fremmer produkternes kvalitet.
