Im zweiten SAFO-Workshop wurden „Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Tierhaltungspraxis zur Sicherung von Tiergesundheit, Tierwohl und Lebensmittelsicherheit im biologischen Landbau“ diskutiert. 78 Teilnehmer aus 25 Ländern, darunter Vertreter aus tiermedizinischer und landwirtschaftlicher Forschung und Praxis nahmen am Workshop teil. Er fand vom 25. bis 27. März 2004 an der Fakultät für ökologische Agrarwissenschaften der Universität Kassel in Witzenhausen statt. Das Programm umfasste 25 Vorträge und 2 Arbeitsgruppensitzungen. Die aktuelle Situation und zukünftige Strategien der Tierhaltungspraxis im biologischen Landbau, der Einfluss von Weide und Fütterung auf Tiergesundheit und Lebensmittelsicherheit, die Problembereiche von Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden von Wiederkäuern und Geflügel, das Tiergesundheitsmanagement sowie die Zertifizierung von Tiergesundheit und Wohlbefinden der Nutztiere wurden thematisiert.
