?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Proceedings+and+conclusions+of+%22Workshop+on+Assurance+of+Quality+and+Safety+in+Organic+Production+Chains%22+in+the+EU+project+%22Recommendations+for+improved+procedures+for+securing+consumer+oriented+food+safety+and+quality+of+certified+organic+foods+from+plough+to+plate%22+(Organic+HACCP)&rft.subject=+Systems+research+and+participatory+research&rft.subject=+Food+security%2C+food+quality+and+human+health&rft.subject=+Policy+environments+and+social+economy&rft.subject=+Values%2C+standards+and+certification&rft.subject=+Processing%2C+packaging+and+transportation&rft.description=The+purpose+of+the+workshop+was+dialogue+between+representatives+for+major+groups+of+stakeholders+and+the+participants+of+the+project+Organic+HACCP%2C+a+EU-funded+concerted+action.+The+method+was+to+present+and+discuss+the+intentions%2C+initial+work+and+plans+of+the+project%2C+and+adjust+the+plans+for+the+subsequent+work+according+to+the+advice+received+from+the+workshop+participants.%0D%0A%0D%0AIn+the+original+plans+for+the+Organic+HACCP+project%2C+it+was+designed+according+to+the+general+assumptions+and+conventions+normally+used+in+the+area+of+food+safety+and+quality%3A+The+assumption+was+that+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9Cthe+consumers%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%9D+have+a+defined%2C+prioritised+list+of+food+properties+that+they+demand%2C+so+that+consumer+oriented+improvements+would+simply+be+to+discover+this+list+and+fulfil+as+many+of+the+items+on+it+as+possible.+The+conventions+were+to+focus+on+things+that+can+go+wrong%2C+which+risks+can+be+prevented+and+problems+solved%2C+as+if+assuming+that+the+people+involved+didn%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99t+care+about+this+unless+they+were+forced.%0D%0A%0D%0AThrough+the+work+before+the+workshop+with+the+consumer+review%2C+and+very+strongly+confirmed+and+further+developed+by+the+discussions+and+inputs+during+the+workshop%2C+it+is+now+clear+that+these+concepts+must+be+revised+and+in+which+direction+we+need+to+refocus+the+work.%0D%0AThe+consumer+values+to+focus+on+are+trust+and+joy.+Here+trust+can+be+seen+as+the+impression+that+the+producer+and+all+others+involved+in+the+chain+are+sincerely+trying+to+deliver+the+best+products+they+can+at+a+fair+price.+Joy+is+then+the+pleasure+of+eating+food+that+tastes+good%2C+is+convenient%2C+and+doesn%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99t+bother+the+conscience.+For+the+organic+production+chain+trust+can+e.g.+translate+into+accountability+and+openness%2C+with+regulations+that+are+seen+as+transparent%2C+logical+and+enforced.+Joy+can+translate+into+provision+of+products+with+good+taste%2C+high+nutritional+value%2C+low+fat+content+and+other+aspects+of+the+consumers%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99+perception+of+good+food.+Trust+is+also+involved+in+relation+to+the+ability+to+provide+good+food.+Repeated+encounters+with+sub-standard+quality%2C+e.g.+not+so+good+taste+(relative+to+the+expectations%2C+which+depend+on+the+price!)%2C+will+counteract+other+measures+to+enhance+trust%2C+since+this+can+be+seen+as+indicating+that+the+food+providers+either+don%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99t+care+about+the+consumer+or+tries+to+cheat+her%2Fhim.%0D%0AFor+the+actual+plans+for+the+work+in+the+project%2C+this+has+the+following+consequences%3A+%0D%0A%C3%A2%C2%88%C2%91+The+questionnaire+should+include+more+questions+on+the+extent+of+trust+among+actors+in+the+organic+food+chain.%0D%0A%C3%A2%C2%88%C2%91+The+recommendations+resulting+from+the+project+should+include+specific+suggestions+for+how+accountability+and+transparency+can+be+improved+in+the+organic+production+chain.+%0D%0A%C3%A2%C2%88%C2%91+Preferably+this+should+be+designed+to+also+support+the+motivation+of+those+involved+for+doing+a+good+job+(by+e.g.+reducing+what+appears+to+be+unnecessary+paperwork+or+inspections).+It+would+be+counterproductive+to+impose+additional+general+burdens+on+the+food+providers%2C+this+would+only+increase+the+incentive+for+cheating%2C+although+specific+groups+may+need+to+be+monitored+more+closely.%0D%0A%C3%A2%C2%88%C2%91+These+recommendations+should+be+made+in+close+collaboration+and+dialogue+with+other+groups+involved+in+setting+standards+and+devising+regulations%2C+to+sort+out+as+many+problems+as+possible+at+the+early+stage.+This+will+maximise+the+chance+that+the+recommended+changes+will+actually+be+implemented.+%0D%0A%C3%A2%C2%88%C2%91+The+new+understanding+of+the+relationship+between+consumers+and+producers%2C+which+was+clearly+defined+at+the+meeting%2C+and+the+general+consensus+about+its+desirability+among+the+stakeholder+representatives+present%2C+are+an+important+and+sufficient+reason+for+going+ahead+with+implementation+of+the+proposed+changes.%0D%0A&rft.contributor=Brandt%2C+Dr.+Kirsten&rft.date=2004&rft.type=Proceedings&rft.type=NonPeerReviewed&rft.format=source&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Forgprints.org%2F2859%2F1%2FOrganic_HACCP_workshop.doc&rft.identifier=Brandt%2C+Dr.+Kirsten+(Ed.)+(2004)+Proceedings+and+conclusions+of+%22Workshop+on+Assurance+of+Quality+and+Safety+in+Organic+Production+Chains%
