Auf der Weide sind nur ein halbes Dutzend Hühner, die unter einem schattenspendenden Baum am Staubbaden sind. Der grösste Teil des Grünauslaufes ist leer. Warum nutzen die Hühner den zur Verfügung stehenden Auslauf nicht besser? Mit dem oben beschriebenen Experiment konnte das FiBL zeigen, dass bereits ein einfacher Unterstand am Ende des Grünauslaufes die Hühner weiter hinaus lockt. Selbstverständlich ist dies keine ideal strukturierte Weide. Es zeigt nur, dass Hühner schutzbietende Strukturen aufsuchen oder sich wenigstens in deren Nähe häufiger aufhalten. Um individuellen Präferenzen der Hühner gerecht zu werden, ist eine vielfältige Umgebung wichtig. Poultry Health and welfare2003Journal paper
