Zur direkten Nutzung der Sonnenenergie sind ausschließlich (Grün)Pflanzen fähig. Nachweislich seit 350000 Jahren ließ der Mensch als Jäger einen Teil dieser von Pflanzen aufgefangenen Sonnenenergie durch Tiere "einsammeln". Rund 10000 Jahre betreibt er Landwirtschaft, seit 9000 Jahren auch mit Rindern. Biologische Landwirtschaft bedeutet in ihrem ursprünglichen Wortsinn eine die Folgerichtigkeit (Logik) des Lebens (Bios) (an)erkennende Landwirtschaft. Sie respektiert, dass Boden, Pflanzen, Tiere und Menschen Mitglieder desselben Lebenssystems und damit auf Gedeih und Verderb aufeinander angwiesen sind. Der Landwirtschaft blieb bis vor 150 Jahren nichts anderes übrig, als diesem Grundsatz zu folgen. Ausgelöst durch die Nutzbarmachung fossiler Energieträger koppelten sich jedoch Landwirtschaft und Wirtschaft insgesamt von der Sonnenenergie und damit von naturgegebenen Zusammenhängen ab.
