In den letzten 20 Jahren wurden in den für die Trinkwasserversorgung genutzten Grundwasserbrunnen im deutschen und schweizerischen Klettgau steigende Nitratkonzentrationen festgestellt. Das FiBL wurde 1996 deshalb vom Kanton Schaffhausen beauftragt, den Einfluss der landwirtschaftlichen Bewirtschaftung auf die Nitratkonzentration im Grundwasser abzuschätzen.
