?url_ver=Z39.88-2004&rft_val_fmt=info%3Aofi%2Ffmt%3Akev%3Amtx%3Adc&rft.title=Developing+the+Infrastructure+for+Organic+Farming+in+Wales+-Project+Evaluation+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93+January+2000+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93+December+2001&rft.creator=Lampard%2C+Jenny&rft.creator=Porter%2C+Colin&rft.subject=+Education%2C+extension+and+communication&rft.subject=+Surveys+and+statistics&rft.subject=+Technology+transfer&rft.description=The+Objective+5b+project+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%98Developing+the+Infrastructure+for+Organic+Farming+in+Wales%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99%2C+of+which+the+Cambrian+Organic+Group+(COG)+is+a+major+component%2C+has+been+running+with+European+financial+support+for+two+years.+It+continued+the+work+of+the+original+Objective+5b+project+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%98Developing+Organic+Farming+in+the+Uplands+of+Wales+which+ran+from+October+1996+to+September+1999.+The+present+project+has+communicated%2C+consulted+and+worked+with+it%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99s+2%2C700+members+through+organic+producer+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93+led+committees%2C+events%2C+representation+at+events%2C+questionnaires+and+a+bi-monthly+newsletter.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn+behalf+of+the+membership%2C+around+70+evening+meetings+and+farm+walks+have+been+held%2C+by+COG+alone%2C+throughout+Wales.+These+have+covered+many+subjects+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93+technical+and+subjective%2C+from+pigs+to+permaculture%2C+managing+grasslands+to+marketing+organic+produce.+%0D%0A%0D%0AOther+projects+have+also+provided%2C+and+continue+to+provide+opportunities+for+farmers+to+learn+more+about+organic+farming.+These+include+the+Organic+Centre+Wales+who+run+the+Organic+Demonstration+Farm+Network+as+part+of+the+WDA+Objective+5b+project+and+Technical+Training+Day+initiative+on+behalf+of+both+the+5b+projects.+%2C+Other+activities+in+Wales+include+Organic+Conversion+Information+Service+(OCIS).+COG+and+projects+such+as+these+have+worked+closely+to+provide+relevant+information+on+organic+farming+and+a+comprehensive%2C+on-going+diary+of+events.%0D%0A%0D%0AThis+report+details+feedback+from+a+questionnaire%2C+and+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%98Focus+on+the+Future%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99+meetings+held+with+COG+producer+members+on+the+support+available+to+them+in+Wales.+The+questionnaire+involved+working+with+the+Organic+Centre+Wales+to+include+questions+on+other+support+projects%2C+run+by+the+Centre.+At+the+same+time+a+questionnaire+on+the+Organic+Conversion+Information+Service+(OCIS)+was+conducted.%0D%0A%0D%0AResults+of+the+COG+questionnaire+survey+show+that+farmers+whatever+their+stage+of+interest+in+organic+farming%2C+appreciate+the+range+of+opportunities+offered+to+them.+They+hope+to+see+many+of+the+projects+continue+in+some+form%2C+and+for+new+support+to+be+established.%0D%0AAs+producers%2C+members+would+like+to+see+more+localised+events%2C+with+a+smaller+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%98group+focus%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99.+Events+not+only+provide+information%2C+they+also+act+as+places+to+exchange+ideas%2C+experiences+and+develop+farming+relationships.%0D%0A%0D%0AThere+is+strong+support+for+the+continuation+of+the+only+Wales-wide+organic+information+Newsletter%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93+The+Cambrian+Organic+Group+Newsletter.+This+provides+up-to-date+information+on+organic+standards%2C+support+and+developments%2C+as+well+as+the+ONLY+organic+-Wales-oriented+resource+for+organic+farming+adverts+and+event+information.%0D%0A%0D%0AMembers+would+like+guidance+on%2C+and+financial+investment+into+developing+organic+processing+facilities+and+marketing+opportunities+in+Wales.+This+will+add+value+to+Welsh+produce%2C+in+Wales+and+provide+producers+with+opportunities+to+sell+their+food+locally.+Members+would+also+like+administration+support+and+advice+on+where+to+go+for+information+and+grants.%0D%0A%0D%0AOn+the+consumer+side+farmers+want+to+encourage+and+support+the+raising+of+public+awareness+of+the+value+of+organic+farming.%0D%0A%0D%0AThere+is+a+need+for+support+to+maintain+and+develop+Wales%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%99+already+strong+organic+-producer+voice.+Wales+is+clearly+valued+for+its+distinct+culture+and+physical+attributes%2C+and+this%2C+with+its+strong+organic+voice+should+be+appreciated+and+cultivated.%0D%0A%0D%0AAs+the+following+report+demonstrates+those+interested+in+organic+farming+are+considering+the+support+they+require%2C+and+also+looking+at+the+whole+picture+of+organic+production%2C+this+is+literally+from+farm%2C+to+fork+-+from+producer+to+processor+to+retailer+to+consumer.&rft.date=2001-12&rft.type=Report&rft.type=NonPeerReviewed&rft.format=application%2Fpdf&rft.identifier=http%3A%2F%2Forgprints.org%2F10824%2F1%2Fcogreview.pdf&rft.identifier=Lampard%2C+Jenny+and+Porter%2C+Colin+(2001)+Developing+the+Infrastructure+for+Organic+Farming+in+Wales+-Project+Evaluation+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93+January+2000+%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93+December+2001.&rft.relation=http%3A%2F%2Forgprints.org%2F10824%2F
