Summary

The concept of “ornamented farms” originates in England. In the 18th century the landscape of many farms was developed to a way to combine functional aims with aesthetic issues. Groups of trees and biotopes like ponds, brooks or hedgerows were integrated into the farmed land, not for reasons of nature conservation but to combine a “modern” agriculture with a nice looking landscape or scenery.
The present investigation deals with the question weather these historical approaches are relevant for organic farms of today. Two examples of ornamented farms in Ger-many are discussed. Aspects of the historical “ornamented farm”-approach could be used to create concepts for whole farms that cover different measures to improve the impact of organic faming on landscape and nature development on farm level.
