Summary

Even though sunflower is primarily considered an oilseed crop, sunflower meal or cake is interesting for animal food, especially for organic farming, where the supply of protein is complicated. The quality of the oil cake is determined by its protein content. A breeding goal for the use of sunflower meal as a protein source is thus to increase the protein content of sunflower seeds without decreasing the oil content.
