Summary
Outdoor tomato production in Central Europe is seriously impaired by Phytophthora infestans. The screening of 3500 accessions identified those with favourable agro-nomic, morphological, and phenological attributes and a high field resistance against P. infestans. About 90% of the most interesting varieties are kept in private collections and genebanks. Commercial varieties were of minor importance. The severity of late blight infections did strongly depend on location and year.
