Summary

Several studies have shown marked differences among varieties in their ability to suppress weed growth. Many of these studies have concluded that crop competitiveness cannot be measured with just a single growth trait, due to the complex interactions between crop and weeds during the dynamic development of canopy and root architecture. However, in a regular screening programme for variety competitiveness only a few, preferentially non-destructive, measurements of the most important growth traits can be afforded. In this study we measured the weed suppressive ability of 79 varieties in two ways: 1) directly, by weed cover assessments under weedy conditions, and 2) indirectly, by sensor measurements of varietal growth traits (early growth rate, leaf angle, and culm length) under weed-free conditions. Based on the growth trait measurements, we were successful at indexing the spring barley varieties, which ranged between 12% and 55% reduction of the maximal weed cover; the index was highly correlated with the observed weed suppressive ability of the varieties.
