Summary
Additional Summary
In order that the effectiveness and environmental impact of a cultivation system may be assessed, reliable nitrogen balances must be available. But the total nitrogen contribution of leguminous plants through nitrogen fixation and rhizodeposition (release from the root system) is largely unknown. Nitrogen fixation and rhizodeposition are therefore often omitted from nitrogen balances, or replaced by rough conventional estimates, which may lead to the wrong conclusion. The project shall, in model experiments, clarify the scope and importance of nitrogen fixation and rhizodeposition, and the way these are affected by cuttings i.e. when the crop is cut to impede the growth of weeds. The researchers shall also investigate how weeding affects the quality of the plant material and the supply of nitrogen to the next crop when leguminous plants are broken down.
