Summary
Additional Summary
The undersowing method is based on a “secondary ” cultivation growing in the row and in the inter-row of the primary crop. The purpose is the reduction of the most dangerous pests.
In the years 2002-2004 some experimental fields were prepared in Piedmont (NW Italy) by CRAB (Reference Centre for the Organic Agriculture) and in Veneto (NE Italy) by “Veneto Agricoltura” with the aim of testing this practice in cabbage, cauliflower, egg plant , pepper and Italian zucchini growing.
Encouraging results were obtained in cabbage crops transplanting on clover Trifolium repens (L.).
In these plots, a meaningful reduction of Mamestra brassicae eggs deposition occurs. Also the aphids populations were lower in the plots of egg plant, pepper and Italian squash associated to the clover but further investigations are necessary about the competition among the secondary culture of clover and these primary cultivations.
