State of the Art:
Norms about dimensions of loose housing systems are made for dehorned cows.
Definition of the problem:
How much space and what kinds of equipments needed for keeping horned cows in free range systems, without having problems with injuries and stressed animals.
Up to now there don’t exist any specifications on dimensions of loose housing systems for horned cows.
Project aims including target group:
-To develop the basics for adequate dimensions and designs of housing systems and relevant management factors for keeping horned cows in loose housing systems
-To develop guidelines for farmers
Methodology:
Investigation of the influence of extra space in diverse housing areas on the (social) behaviour and the frequency of skin injuries in research herd
Inquiry on farms: Scoring of skin injuries and registration of housing conditions, management methods and experiences of farmers
