Summary

The aim of this chapter is to highlight some of the prospects and constraints for the development of the organic pig production.
Livestock rearing should contribute to a more balanced overall production of the farm, food safety (in a wide sense) should be enhanced, and animal welfare should be compared better to conventional production methods. Futhermore, the environmental load should be low. The success of the expansion of organic systems will depend on to what degree these different expectations can be fulfilled without resulting in too high premium prices of the products.
