Summary

Summary translation

Bois noir (BN), a phytoplasma disease, is an increasing problem in viticulture. Infection pressure depends on the presence of herbaceous host plants of both the phytoplasma and the vectoring planthopper, Hyalesthes obsoletus, whose nymphs feed on the roots of those plants. Green cover and soil cultivation have an influence on the infection pressure. This study had the objective to obtain information on the infection pressure by BN in organic vineyards and to develop approaches to the control of BN in organic viticulture. Three common weeds, field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis), hedge bindweed (Calystegia sepium) and stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) have been identified as host plants of BN in organic vineyards. No differences between conventional and organic vineyards were found with regard to the population density and the infestation of vector populations with the BN phytoplasma. However, the frequency of vines with visible symptoms was lower in organic vineyards. Suppression of bindweed in both vineyards and adjacent fallow plots by green cover is an important measure to decrease infection pressure by BN. Due to the xerothermic conditions on the steep slopes were the study was carried out, common green cover plants proved to be not suitable. Better results could be achieved with hawkweed and mixtures of different herbs. Grubbing the soil short after egg deposition by the vector was not successful to decrease vector population density. Ploughing the soil in winter caused frost damage to the nymphs of H. obsoletus and decreased population density significantly. The insect pathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae exhibited a significant lethal effect on H. obsoletus in laboratory trials. Field experiments have not been carried out yet. As a result of this work, an information leaflet on BN has been prepared for growers (http://www.bba.de/veroeff/popwiss/schwarzholzrebe.pdf)
