Summary

Summary translation

The spatial distribution of organic farming in Germany shows remarkable differences. This study aims to investigate the factors determining the spatial distribution of organic farming as well as to illustrate the distribution of organic farming with maps at NUTS 3- Level.
The influence of different factors on the spatial distribution of organic farming will be tested with uni- and multivariate statistics. The data on agriculture for the statistical analysis is based on the general farm census in 1999.
Agglomeration effects strengthen the sector of organic farming within a region. Furthermore, real expenditure of the “Bundesländer” to support organically managed grassland bring forward the share of organically managed land. In contrast, this relation can not be confirmed for the expenditures of organically managed arable area. The share of water and nature protected areas and a low soil quality affect the share of organic farming positively. For the tested variables regarding consumers (income and population density) no influence of the spatial distribution of organic farming can be found. The share of grassland and the average farm size does not seem to have an effect on the spatial distribution of organic farming. Testing the variables for Germany as a whole and for parts of Germany may lead to different results. In a defined region around dairies processing organic milk, a significant higher share of organically managed land is found. This effect can not be confirmed for the proximity to mills.
The achieved coefficient of determination for the multivariate Analysis varies between 0,57 for Southern Germany and 0,26 for Germany as a whole. Therefore, other factors, not considered in this study, may also affect the spatial distribution of organic farming in Germany.
