Summary

Die Diskussion über die Tierhaltung im Ökolandbau hat sich in den letzten Jahren beträchtlich intensiviert. Es ist allerdings schwierig, diese Diskussion auf einen einzigen gemeinsamen Nenner zu bringen und eine vorläufige Bilanz zu ziehen. Die
Diskussion wird auf sehr vielen und auf sehr unterschiedlichen Ebenen geführt.
Was sich beim Blick auf die verschiedenen Diskussionslinien allerdings aufdrängt, ist der Eindruck, dass die Zukunft der Ökologischen Tierhaltung von vielen Diskutanten mit beträchtlichen Fragezeichen versehen wird und dass sich diese Fragezeichen keineswegs auf untergeordnete Probleme beziehen.

Animal husbandry is a crucial and important part of organic farming. Consumers and society have strong attitudes and expectations concerning animal welfare and animal husbandry practices. Even on organic farms many of these expectations are far from reality. Animals on farms are not kept like pets. Standards and regulations like 1804/99/EG describe the way animal should be kept. From the consumer point of view, these standards are not adequate, from the farmers’ point of view, the standards are too harsh and difficult
to put into practice. The different perspectives and intentions of consumers and organic farmers concerning animal husbandry can create irritations in the future. A merger between public expectations (visions) and practice (reality) is necessary. Organic animal husbandry has to be developed in the direction of consumer expectations. If visions and realities differ greatly, animal husbandry perceived to be poor can create an image problem for all organic farming. Improvements in animal health, product quality and high standards for animal welfare are necessary. Knowledge and management skills are a major force for improvements in animal husbandry on farms. Economic pressure, poor infrastructure (education, extension, markets, advertising) and insufficient scientific emphasis are the main reasons for development problems.
