Ryhti Team

The team’s research focuses on the following:

  • Producing and testing ecologically sustainable and economically competitive cultivation techniques
  • Utilizing community waste in plant production
  • Recycling nutrients
  • Assessing the environmental effects of foodstuff production and delivery chains
  • The vitality and regional cooperation of eastern Finland countryside
The research covers food production from field back to field. The following items are researched in the projects: Organic and conventional cultivation of berries, grass plants and legume, grains and potato. In addition to primary production the research focuses on the environmental effects of the processing and consumption of foodstuffs and the use of community waste in cultivating field plants.

A long winter with abundant snow, moraine soil and small field patterns combined with a landscape scattered with lakes, rocks and forests, which is typical of eastern Finland, set special, regional requirements for the research, but also offer a possibility to develop rural entrepreneurship many-sidedly. The aim of the cooperation with Russian regions nearby is to improve interaction and reciprocally benefit from the knowledge produced in research.

The team is headed by Päivi Nykänen-Kurki.
