Summary

Direct drilling of winter wheat in living mulches of white clover resulted in dry matter yields and forage quality of whole crop silage similar to wheat sown after ploughing. Grain yields, however, were lower in the intercropping system than in the sole wheat system. As wheat/clover “bicropping” caused very high grain yields of succeeding crops (oats, rye), it was concluded that the system allows to grow both cash crop and green manure crop in the same year and, therefore, might be a profitable alternative to otherwise common green manures in organic crop rotations.
