Summary

Summary translation

The RELEVANT project will investigate the effects of diversified crop rotations with faba beans (Vicia faba) and peas (Pisum sativum) on the diversity of pollinators and epigeic arthropods and the provisioning of regulating ecosystem services (pollination and biological control). Based on the quantification of biodiversity mediated ecosystem services, the economic relevance of pollination and biological control services will be evaluated. The RELEVANT project cooperates with the DemoNetErBo, which is a collaborative platform that aims at the realisation of the goals of the national Plant Protein Strategy. One major goal of the Protein Plant Strategy is the realisation of diversified crop rotations with grain legumes to promote more sustainable farming schemes, particularly in conventionally managed farms.
The diversity, resource exploitation and the reproductive potential of pollinators and natural enemies of pest species will be recorded at farm and landscape-scale. Within 1 km x 1 km study landscapes sampling will take place in all major elements of the crop rotation schemes of the farms. We will establish a paired experimental design to analyse the effects of diversified crop rotations on farms with and without grain legumes in their crop cycles. The pollination potential and levels of biological control will be recorded. Moreover, we will develop seed mixtures to promote ecosystem services and to reduce disservices at farm and landscape level. The economic evaluation of the regulation ecosystem services will be conducted at the three levels: 1. production process, 2. crop rotation and 3. farm level.
Based on the comprehensive economic and ecological evaluation, we will develop guidelines for crop diversification with grain legumes to promote agrobiodiversity, ecosystem services and more sustainable agricultural production.
