Summary

This paper is the extended version of an oral presentation at a two day meeting questioning the way ish is currently produced for human consumption including isheries and aquaculture and the way ish might be produced in the near future. his paper gives an overview of the current status of ish welfare and tries to answer the question whether or not ish can be produced in an animal friendly way. Still, it is only a brief overview of a very complex topic which has been discussed for over three decades and which will be even more discussed in the future. Whole books have failed to answer the question mentioned above.
Due to the complexity of the topic there is not an easy answer: the answer depends on many manmade deinitions.
