Summary

Summary translation

Organic farming may increase the biodiversity. This is affected by specific methods like diverse crop rotation and limited direct control measures. A long-term experiment was initiated at the Julius-Kühn Institute in 1996 with an organically managed field of 12 ha located close to Braunschweig. In order to quantify the plant diversity the abundance of weed species were assessed in the soil seed bank in 1996 and 2011. Abundance and diversity of plant species were calculated as number of species, number of individuals and the Shannon index of diversity. The number of weed species significantly increased 15 years after conversion to organic farming. Compared to only 19 weed species in the initial year 1996 in the soil seed bank 53 species were found in 2011. The Shannon index of diversity was more than double, e.g. 0.97 in 1996 and 2.07 in 2011. However, the most predominant species like Apera spica-venti, Thlaspi arvense and Matricaria chamomilla were the same in both years. Typical summer annual weed species like Chenopodium album and Polygonum convolvulus significantly spreaded all over the field. The total seed bank increased from 1099 seeds/m² in 1996 to 11855 seeds/m² in 2011. Although these indicators demonstrate the positive effect of organic farming on the plant diversity, rare plant species could hardly be identified. Filago arvensis was the only weed species which is classified as endangered in Germany.
